Water Cycle/Weather Unit
Weather research report

What do they have to know in this unit?

·      Water takes the form of a solid, a  liquid, or a gas.

·      Temperature determines the point at which water changes from liquid to solid, from solid to liquid, and from liquid to gas.

·      Adding heat or taking away heat changes the state of water.

·         Water freezes at 32 F/0 C and boils at

·         212 F/32 C.

·         Evaporation occurs when tiny droplets of water too small to see rise into the air and turn into water vapor.  It is the changing of a liquid into a gas.

·         Condensation occurs when water vapor cools or loses heat.  It is the changing of a gas into a liquid.

·         Clouds are formed as water vapor in the air condenses.

·         The water cycle is the continuous movement of the earth’s water from the oceans (evaporation) to the air (condensation) and back to the oceans and land again (precipitation).

·         Precipitation is water that falls to the earth

·         as rain, snow, sleet or hail.

·         Rain is liquid water falling from the sky.

·         Snow is very small amounts of water (smaller than raindrops) that freeze and stick together and fall to earth.

·         Sleet is raindrops that fall through cold layers of air.

·         Hail is frozen raindrops which rise and fall many times through warm and cold layers of air, getting bigger each time.

·         Fog is a cloud close to the ground which forms when the air is damp and the ground is cold.

What do the students have to do in this unit?

·         Identify how water looks as a solid, liquid, and gas.

·         Identify and describe the temperatures that change water to different states.

·         Give several examples of evaporation and condensation.

·          Investigate and describe how clouds are formed through condensation.

·         Describe and demonstrate how the water cycle works.

·         Identify and describe various forms of precipitation.

Describe the weather conditions that cause fog to occur.
